Timber Industry
Walcha, the 'wooden heart' of the New England Tablelands, is the centre of a vibrant timber industry. Directly employing some 150 people, the timber industry is worth millions of dollars to the region. The Walcha Shire produces approximately 25,000 cubic meters of hardwood logs annually.
It is in the softwood industry however where some exciting developments are occurring. At present there are some 13,000 ha of softwood, mainly pinus radiata, planted in the Walcha / Nundle area. It is proposed that this estate be increased to 50,000 ha in coming years. Work on expanding the estate is currently under way and the result will see a volume of resources that is capable of supporting a large processing industry.
The future of Walcha's softwood industry looks very bright indeed and there are opportunities for private investors to share that future with us!
